Design & Build Quality The Kiwi Ears Halcyon have a clean and sleek design. The shells are crafted from beautifully CNC-machined aluminum, giving them a refined and premium appearance.
The included modular cable is one of the better stock cables. It feels lightweight, flexible and well constructed. The interchangeable 3.5mm and 4.4mm terminations add useful versatility. The brown braided design also perfectly complements the Halcyon’s aesthetic, giving it a distinctly high-end appearance. The quality of the cable itself leaves little reason to replace the stock cable.
Comfort & Fit The Kiwi Ears Halcyon offers a comfortable fit thanks to its compact and relatively lightweight aluminum shells. A built-in pressure-relief system further helps reduce listening fatigue.
Like many high-performance IEMs, tip selection plays an important role in achieving the best seal and fit. The Halcyon is no exception. Once properly fitted, the Halcyon offers good passive isolation and remains comfortable and secure. In the case of the Halcyon, the included ear tips noticeably influence the final sound signature, which will be discussed in more detail later in the review.
Technical Specifications The Kiwi Ears Halcyon is built around a sophisticated tribrid driver architecture that combines multiple driver technologies to cover different parts of the frequency range. For the bass response, Kiwi Ears uses a 10mm dynamic driver with a composite diaphragm. The midrange is handled by a pair of custom balanced armature drivers. The upper frequencies are handled by an additional custom balanced armature together with a modern USound MEMS driver. The MEMS driver is implemented to further enhance treble precision, speed and extension. All drivers are integrated through a carefully tuned crossover network.
Usound MEMS driver A USound MEMS driver is a new type of speaker technology designed specifically for ultra-compact audio devices such as in-ear monitors. Unlike traditional dynamic drivers or balanced armatures, a MEMS driver is built using silicon-based Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems technology, similar to the manufacturing process used for computer chips. Instead of relying on the usual moving components and voice coils, the MEMS driver uses microscopic mechanical structures to reproduce sound with extremely high precision and speed.
This results in faster transient response, cleaner treble reproduction, improved detail retrieval and a more controlled presentation. In the Halcyon, the MEMS driver is used as a dedicated high-frequency driver.

Sound quality The Kiwi Ears Halcyon combines multiple driver technologies, including a dynamic driver, balanced armatures and a modern MEMS driver. With a configuration like this, you might expect a presentation that leans heavily into technical performance or analytical detail. Especially the addition of a MEMS driver could suggest a brighter or more pronounced top end. Quite the opposite, the Halcyon sounds natural and balanced, avoiding a sterile or overly clinical presentation.
Listening to the Halcyon, revealed a surprisingly balanced and coherent tuning. The bass is slightly elevated with a strong subbass presence, giving the presentation satisfying depth and impact. It does remain controlled and well separated from the mids. The midrange follows a relatively neutral presentation with good clarity and openness. Vocals sound clean and well positioned, while instruments maintain a natural sense of separation and definition. The upper frequencies sound fast and highly detailed, delivering excellent extension and a strong sense of resolution. The tuning avoids excessive sharpness.
Overall, the Halcyon delivers a tuning that sits somewhere between an L-shaped and mild U-shaped presentation, combining strong low-end presence with a clean, technically capable and engaging sound signature.
note: The Kiwi Ears Halcyon comes with both narrow-bore and wide-bore ear tips, each noticeably affecting the final presentation. The wide-bore tips push the midrange slightly more forward, but also result in a softer upper treble response with a somewhat smaller stage and less precise imaging.
The narrow-bore tips, on the other hand, create a more spacious and energetic presentation with additional upper-treble presence. This gives the Halcyon a greater sense of openness, although the slightly relaxed upper midrange can make imaging sound a bit softer around vocals and central instruments.
Treble Treble performance is where the MEMS driver integration becomes most apparent. The Halcyon delivers an highly extended upper-end response with excellent speed and resolution. Micro-details are presented effortlessly, creating a strong sense of openness and refinement without immediately pushing the presentation into harsh and fatiguing territory.
There is sparkle and energy, yet the tuning avoids sounding sharp or unnatural. The upper frequencies contribute heavily to the Halcyon’s sense of space and detail retrieval, while still maintaining a smooth overall presentation.
Midrange The midrange follows a relatively neutral and clean presentation with a slight sense of openness throughout the vocal region. Vocals sound clear and natural without becoming overly forward. Instruments maintain good separation and positioning within the mix. Nothing feels artificially thickened for warmth. The Halcyon favors clarity and balance while retaining enough body to avoid sounding thin or sterile.
The transition between lower mids, vocals and upper mids feels smooth and consistent. Nothing sounds disjointed or artificial. Detail retrieval is excellent, but the Halcyon avoids forcing detail unnaturally to the foreground.
Bass The bass performance of the Kiwi Ears Halcyon is primarily focused on the subbass region, delivering a deep and controlled low-end presentation with good physical presence. There is a satisfying sense of rumble and impact. The bass is controlled and avoids bleeding into the midrange. The dynamic driver delivers good layering and definition, allowing bass lines and kick drums to sound tight. Rather than focusing on excessive warmth or midbass emphasis, the Halcyon delivers a clean and controlled low-end response with well-defined bass notes and strong textural detail.
Soundstage & Imaging There is good width and depth to the stage. Instruments and vocals are clearly positioned within the mix. Busier passages remain open and well organized without sounding compressed. Imaging is slightly softer and more relaxed in its presentation. Layering is handled well, offering a convincing sense of depth without becoming analytical. Notes fade out naturally, helping the presentation sound more fluid and organic.
The Kiwi Ears Halcyon does not chase an overly massive or artificially expanded soundstage. The overall presentation is spacious, but remains natural and realistically proportioned.
LISTENING IMPRESSIONS The tracks below were chosen to cover a wide range of sonic traits and support the impressions described above.
Mario Bauzá & His Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra – El Manisero (Album: My Time Is Now) The Halcyon handles El Manisero with excellent rhythmic control and separation. Afro-Cuban percussion often becomes congested. Especially once the brass section and layered percussion enter simultaneously, the Halcyon keeps the presentation organized and spacious. The brass section has strong energy and presence without becoming harsh. Trumpets cut through the mix with convincing bite, while cymbals and percussion retain plenty of air and sparkle.
Marcio Faraco – Sur Un Fil (Album: L’électricien de la Ville Lumière) This track immediately highlights the Halcyon’s natural midrange presentation. Marcio Faraco’s voice sounds intimate and relaxed, positioned slightly forward. The presentation remains clean and fluid, allowing subtle phrasing and vocal texture to come through naturally. The acoustic instrumentation benefits greatly from the Halcyon’s fast transient response. Guitar strings sound crisp and well defined.
Jane Monheit & Ivan Lins – Rio de Maio (Album: Surrender) This duet has a convincing sense of openness and separation between both vocalists. Jane Monheit’s voice sounds smooth and controlled, while Ivan Lins’ vocals retain warmth and presence. Their voices remain clearly separated within the stage, making the duet sound natural and engaging. The instrumental background and piano are reproduced with good depth and layering.
Sophie Milman – So Long, You Fool (Album: Make Someone Happy) Sophie Milman’s vocals are reproduced with excellent clarity and articulation. The Halcyon avoids adding unnecessary warmth or coloration, allowing her voice to sound clean and expressive. Double bass notes sound textured and controlled, with the subbass lift adding a bit more physicality to the lower registers without overpowering the arrangement.
Concha Buika & Chucho Valdés – Sombras (Album: El Último Trago) Concha Buika’s voice carries raw texture and emotion without becoming overly forward. The slightly softer upper mids keep her vocals smooth and natural, without losing detail or expression. Piano notes from Chucho Valdés sound spacious and well layered, with strong separation between the instrument and vocals.
Candy Dulfer – Pick Up The Pieces (Album: Live in Amsterdam) This track immediately shows the Halcyon’s ability to handle energetic live recordings without losing control. The bass line sounds tight and rhythmic, while the subbass lift gives the performance additional drive and physical impact. Drums remain punchy and well separated from the rest of the mix. Candy Dulfer’s saxophone carries strong presence and bite, but does not become harsch. The live atmosphere is reproduced convincingly.
Chris Jones – Long After You’re Gone (Album: Moonstruck) Chris Jones’ deep vocal presentation benefits from the clean and controlled lower midrange, allowing his voice to sound full without becoming overly warm. Guitar is reproduced with precision and texture. The slightly elevated subbass adds weight to the presentation without disturbing the balance of the track.
Conclusion The Kiwi Ears Halcyon combines a compact and lightweight aluminum shell with solid build quality and a premium overall finish, making it comfortable to wear.
Kiwi Ears implemented a sophisticated tribrid configuration that combines a dynamic driver, multiple balanced armatures and a modern Usound MEMS driver. A setup like this could easily have resulted in an overly analytical or clinical sounding IEM if not executed properly. Fortunately, Kiwi Ears clearly understood how to balance technical performance with musicality.
The Halcyon delivers a highly detailed and technically capable presentation while maintaining strong coherence throughout the frequency range. Its subbass performance stands out with deep extension, convincing texture and satisfying physical presence. The MEMS driver contributes to air, speed and treble extension without pushing the sound into harsh territory. Combined with the spacious staging and strong layering, the overall presentation feels open, clean and engaging.
Although the Halcyon is not strictly neutral due to its slightly elevated subbass response and additional upper-treble energy, these elements mainly enhance the sense of excitement and openness while still preserving a natural and controlled presentation. Despite its energetic character, the Halcyon never loses composure or balance.
More importantly, the Halcyon proves that strong technical performance alone means very little if the music itself is not enjoyable. Kiwi Ears successfully managed to create an IEM that sounds resolving and refined, yet remains musical and easy to listen to.
The Halcyon is another well-executed release from Kiwi Ears and an easy recommendation for listeners seeking a detailed yet natural sounding IEM.
